Little Things: A Memoir in Slices Jeffrey Brown Touchstone Books 352 pp $14.00

The latest from Jeffrey Brown’s autobiographical comics finds magic in day-to-day activities. While his previous books share Brown’s medical problems and relationships in what are often painfully personal depictions, this work seems to be a collection of all the stories that didn’t fit within those themes. Here we see Brown enjoy some of the simpler things in his life, like a camping trip or discovering new music. Brown’s art remains consistent and he uses an almost child-like drawing style that trades detail for more raw expression. Using an economy of lines, Brown lets the characters involved express subtle emotions quite simply. As the title implies, Little Things is a celebration of the little successes, failures and mundane events that fill a life. They are never overly dramatized or exciting, simply a slice-of-life that oozes with a raw and genuine love of the comic medium.
